研究概要：日本を主な調査地として、病気をめぐる文化、身体、科学技術との相互作用を研究しています。病院、実験室、患者会など、多種多様な医療現場において2003年からフォールドワークを積み重ねることにより、慢性病の増加に伴う身体感覚の変容について探求してきた。またここ最近は、調査範囲をハンガリーと東アジアに広げて、薬用植物の栽培および研究開発を調べ始めています。創薬に焦点をあてることで、未来を生み出そうとする多様な実践に内在する人間および動植物の共生を描き出し、また伝統医療と近代医療との交差から見えてくる、比較方法の新たな可能性を探ります。

Research: Gergely MOHÁCSI is a medical anthropologist with special interest in science and technology studies and comparative ethnography. His research has focused on the embodied interactions between science, medicine and society in contemporary Japan, most notably in the domain of diabetes self-care. He conducted fieldwork in hospitals, laboratories and patient groups in Japan and Hungary. Currently, he is investigating the co-constitution of things and values in the development and use of herbal medications in Japan and Southeast Asia. By highlighting the entanglement of different medical traditions and the multispecies interactions between medicinal plants and humans in the process of producing new medications, he aims to explore the new possibilities and challenges of ethnographic comparison.
